Category: Tuber succulents

Fockea edulis, commonly known as 'Hottentot bread', originates from South Africa and belongs to the Apocynaceae family. It is a thin vining winter-dormant plant that can reach up to 4 meters in height, with twisted tuberous roots and stems that grow up to 10 feet long and 2 feet wide.

Flowering occurs in late summer, with beautiful greenish-white flowers produced. To care for your Hottentot bread plant, water frequently from spring to fall, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings. Reduce watering in the winter to prevent the tuber from shriveling. Additionally, feed with a high-nitrogen fertilizer during the growing season to promote tuber growth.

For optimal growth, plant Fockea edulis in a fast-draining soil mix. These plants are cold-hardy, with a frost tolerance of -2°C (28.4°F) and are suitable for hardiness zones 9b to 11. They prefer partial shade sun exposure, although they can tolerate full sun with some shade during the hottest part of the day.

Propagation is relatively simple, as Hottentot bread plants can be grown from seed. They are dioecious, requiring both male and female plants to produce seeds. This unique and eye-catching plant is versatile and can thrive in various settings.
